SITUATION ANALYSIS
Rising claims costs from catastrophic weather events and the impact of social inflation created the need for deeper internal coverage capability to maintain profitability and growth. Despite continued strong performance, our client sought to further solidify its internal legal resources to manage complex claims and reduce dependency on external counsel. The Senior Coverage Counsel role was created as a strategic response to these industry challenges, ensuring the company could provide robust coverage analysis and advisory support internally.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Coverage Counsel serves as the premier legal advisor on insurance coverage matters within the organization, providing expert guidance on complex coverage issues, interpreting policy language and offering practical legal advice aligned with business objectives. This executive collaborates closely with claims, underwriting and product development teams to evaluate claims scenarios and influence policy form development. A critical aspect of the role is developing and delivering internal training programs to enhance coverage knowledge, building a centralized repository of legal guidance and mentoring junior coverage counsel to foster a culture of internal expertise and strategic legal insight.
SUCCESSFUL PLACEMENT
Our placement brings more than 25 years of legal and insurance experience. They most recently served as a senior coverage attorney at a national insurance carrier, providing enterprise-wide coverage opinions and strategic claims guidance across personal and commercial lines, advising claims teams on complex coverage matters, overseeing declaratory judgment actions and contributing to policy language and company standards. Earlier in their career, they managed insurance litigation, served as corporate counsel and built broad expertise across claims, coverage, underwriting and risk management.
